Slight Confession Regarding NR18
I got the plans and roads from NPE for Ashford to RTW. Someone still needs to cycle this route to get better accuracy. Sorry! I will tell you about it at the Medway meet.--TimSC 17:25, 5 November 2007 (UTC)
When I drove back from the London to Brighton Bike Ride I followed NR18 back to Ashford from Tenterden. I was, of course, recording a tracklog with my GPS. I think I tweaked the relevant roads a little to match my tracklog. --Gregoryw 23:52, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Incidentally do you know anything about the status of the Bluebell's extension?
It would be traceable from NPE as would the rest of the Oxted route, but how to tag, It's technically railway=dismantled at present, but should be railway=proposed...?

BrowseRelation template
Hi, I noticed you modified Template:BrowseRelation for 0.6 API, but the example "12345" link still points to the 0.5 API which now links to a 404 page. Does the change just need time to propagate or does something else need to be done? ChrisB 11:43, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
- I think it's that the change needs time to propagate, or perhaps for a cached version to expire. It's a weird case of a template referring to itself, so I'm not quite sure. The template is used on loads of pages so it was an evil thing for me to ask the server to do. Needs to be done at some point though! --Gregoryw 11:58, 21 April 2009 (UTC)
A weird request
I'm from Margate, and I often see your name pop up on edits. Been mapping with iD for over a year now and am moving over JOSM and getting more serious. (GPS tracks, etc)
Do you have any tips or advice you could give me? Is there a shared offset database?

I surveyed a large proportion of the roads and paths in Thanet with a GPS by bike. All of my GPS traces should be uploaded to OSM. So when using JOSM you can get those (and the ones from other people) by ticking the "Raw GPS data" option in the Download window. For aligning aerial imagery, such as that from Bing, I line up on the roads that have been derived from these GPS traces. I know that you can store and load imagery offsets in JOSM. Other than performing this perhaps once or twice I don't really do this -- I just line up on the roads as they are now (i.e. keeps the relative distances between the roads and whatever I'm tracing from the aerial imagery (e.g. buildings) correct, even if the saved offset is somehow wrong (e.g. perhaps Bing have since updated their imagery and the offset has changed slightly).
JOSM is very powerful and it's difficult to know exactly what to suggest as tips without knowing what kind of things you like mapping. Some things that I use fairly frequently:
- The "JOSM Remote Control" functionality in various websites (such as Gregrs's FHRS comparison) to allow it to send commands to JOSM from those websites;
- Access to OSM's Notes facility for recording things to be looked at further;
- Filtering what I see in my view (e.g. I sometimes dim everything except the highways in the view when the area is densely mapped with other things like buildings, as it just makes it easier to pick things out);
- Careful use of the search functionality to try to find indicators of holes in the data that further mapping could help to improve, e.g. buildings or businesses without postcodes;
- For address mapping I tend to use Keypad-Mapper 3 on my phone in combination with JOSM and Bing, replacing the nodes that it generates in the GPX file with buildings that I've traced from Bing. I also use Chris Hill's OS OpenData CodePoint overlays for merging in postcodes (although not definitive for each address it's a good starting point).

In case that you are the author of the image: Would you agree to open licensing of this image, allowing its use by anyone (similarly to your OSM edits)?
In case where it is a photo you (except relatively rare cases) author can make it available under a specific free license.
Would you be OK with CC0 (it allows use without attribution or any other requirement)?
Or do you prefer to require attribution and some other things using CC-BY-SA-4.0?
