Halton is an unitary authority in North West England at latitude 53°20′55.91″ North, longitude 2°44′01.76″ West.
Halton unitary authority was formed 1 April 1998 replacing the previous two-tier system of county and district councils. It replaced the county council of Cheshire and Halton district council.
It primarily comprises of the towns of Widnes and Runcorn, which are divided by the River Mersey.
Together with the unitary authorities of Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester and Warrington it forms the ceremonial county of Cheshire.
