Reducing article to a stub
Given that there is a long-running dispute on whether to use this tag or source:maxspeed=* to define the type of speed limit I have reduced both articles to brief summaries and created a clear links to Speed limits. Lets have any further discussion on that page. PeterIto (talk) 01:27, 24 February 2013 (UTC)
Issues with explicitly tagging maxspeed in addition to maxspeed:type
Wiki currently states that "maxspeed:type=* should be accompanied by a maxspeed=* tag", which seems to be disputed as it brings several problems - adding just maxspeed=* results in incorrect data being introduced - if they are being added, all other maxspeed tags (like maxspeed:hgv=* etc. that differ in speed limit) must be added too!, possibility of implicit/explicit data being out of sync, issues when law changes, etc. See https://github.com/streetcomplete/StreetComplete/discussions/5131 for discussion with more details about the problem --mnalis (talk) 13:39, 9 July 2023 (UTC)
- Tagging a maxspeed=* never implies that the speed limit is the same for all modes of transportation.
- You don't have to tag all of these modes, but it is considered desirable to add the main maxspeed=* when using maxspeed:type=*. In case the law changes, the redundancy is actually a feature: you can spot the discrepancy and go check if traffic signs have been changed as well: traffic signs may have been added to the road to opt-out of the default speed limit change.
- In some cases, a maxspeed:type=* can only be used in one specific zone:traffic=*. In this case it is desirable to add the zone:traffic=* tag as well.
