Translation of the map
Translation of the map texts has become quite easy recently as all text strings of a language are grouped in a translation table. The tables can be easily edited as wiki pages (see below). Please inform us when you've finished, so we can import your changes. We don't want to fully automate this process for quality assurance reasons. We greatly appreciate translations from native speakers. Beginning from scratch, create a new wiki page DE:Historical Objects/Translations/table.<language shortcut>, copy the content from one of the existing translation tables and start editing. Thus, even someone not being able to understand German may help translating. He only must understand one of the already existing languages (in the copied table the source language terms are in the right column and need to be replaced by the destination language terms. The German language terms must always remain in the left column).

The map is continuously maintained. In case of new terms (which we cannot translate ourselves) we mostly use an english term as a placeholder. If you want to help us with the correct term - please be welcome and send it to us or edit the corresponding wiki table! It can be helpful to put the table on your watchlist (asterisk besides version history), so you will get informed about changes automatically.
Our aim is to cover at least the global main languages spoken in many countries. Of course, any other language is welcome, too!
Translation of the wiki pages
At least as important as the map legend translation is the map wiki translation, that is the page Historical Objects and its subpages. Be warned, it's a bit more work than translation of the map (as you have to understand the very basics of wikitext). But now you're likely already a professional, so you will succeed!
The best way to proceed is as follows: Create a new page XY:Historical Objects where XY is the new language's official shortcut. Copy the source code of Historical Objects to the edit window of the new page. Now begin to translate the text in the edit window. Proceed with all subpages in the same way.
Important: Anchors should not be translated, they serve as link destination from map legend of the particular historical object.
It is also helpful to adapt wikipedia links to the respective national wikipedia version (provided a corresponding article exists).
Screenshots should be re-generated from a national version of the respective software, e.g. for the JOSM presets (if possible).
It is very helpful to insert a comment at the very beginning of the new page, as follows:
- <!-- please keep up to date: This page corresponds to "Historische Objekte" from 26. Oktober 2013 um 11:59 -->
So a later editor can see which exact version of a wiki page this translation is based on. This makes it easier to apply changes from the original page since that version. Afterwards the comment should be adapted to the new version.
